I hope that this year has been treating you well so far and that you are back in full swing at work and hopefully pain-free

However, if you are experiencing pain from an injury, repetitive movements, or other everyday activities, you might be wondering whether you should see a chiropractor or a physiotherapist (or both). We get asked this question quite a lot in practice and decided to quickly explain the difference and when to see each one. Driving Directions to Dr Vicki

There are two major differences between chiropractors and physiotherapists. The first being the training and education and the second being manipulation and mobilization of the joints and soft tissue.

Chiropractors can either study at the University of Johannesburg or Durban University of Technology. The course is 6 to 7 years long (depending on how long your thesis takes to complete). During this time we do a basic Bsc degree and then start to specialize in chiropractic adjusting techniques as well as diagnostics. This allows us to call ourselves Drs of chiropractics.

We also get taught soft tissue techniques which include sports massage, dry needling and different types of electrotherapy. To qualify as a chiropractor you also need to complete an extensive internship and see a certain number of patients in the Chiropractic Clinic. This is similar to the medical doctors community service years.

Physiotherapists study a minimum of 4 years at most universities in the country and during their fourth year they are also required to submit a thesis to obtain an Honors degree. During their studies they gain enough experience to work in hospitals to treat post-operative patients as well as treating sports injuries and doing some rehabilitation.

Read Our Latest Blog: Can a Chiropractor Help With Sciatica Pain?

However, when it comes to deciding which discipline to see for your pains, the next section will help.
A big difference between the two disciplines is that a chiropractor uses manipulation, while a physiotherapist will use what is known as mobilization techniques. The two can be compared as follows:

Chiropractors adjust the joints (where two bones meet) of your spine and limbs where signs of restricted movement are found. Gentle, specific manipulation techniques (high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust) help to restore normal body movement. In addition to gently manipulating your joints and using soft tissue techniques for muscles (massage, dry needling, cupping etc.), your chiropractor will also give you home stretches and exercises as well as teach you about ergonomics in the workplace.

Physiotherapists tend to utilize mobilisation which involves moving the joint through its range of motion to relieve pain and muscle spasms, release tension and improve flexibility in a joint. Physiotherapists aim to improve muscle weaknesses or imbalances which can be due to injuries, surgery or repetitive strain. They handle more post-surgical or post-stroke rehabilitations than chiropractors normally do. Overall, with physiotherapy there is a larger emphasis on using specific, targeted exercises for rehabilitating muscles and restoring movement. Physiotherapy can also treat some respiratory conditions to give relief to babies and adults suffering with phlem and difficulty breathing.

Both professions aim to provide you with comfort, relief and well-being.

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the thick tissue connecting your heel and your toes. Plantar fasciitis, which is a common cause of foot pain, is one of the most common. This is caused by overstretched tissue, small tears, and often as a consequence of excessive running or walking.

Walking can be used to treat Planter Fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis can make walking painful, but walking to exercise is one of its best treatments. Plantar fasciitis can be treated. You will feel more comfortable and able to continue walking. Sometimes the pain can be so severe that it makes it impossible to walk. Your Centurion Chiropractor can help you manage this condition. Your Chiropractor may suggest lifestyle changes that could help you.

What does the impact of my diet have on Plantar Fasciitis

Common foods can increase inflammation. These include refined grains, sugar and trans fats in junk food and baked goods, red meat saturated fat, and many vegetable oils such as soybeans, corn, and sunflower oils. Chronic allergies to wheat, barley and rye can cause increased inflammation in the body. Plantar fasciitis patients may be able to reduce the amount of protein gluten in wheat, barley, and Rye.

Consuming too many sweets, white flour, pasta, and other foods that increase blood sugar quickly can also contribute to inflammation.

Green leafy vegetables have many health benefits. There is strong evidence linking them to a lower risk of developing chronic diseases. While Omega-3 fatty acids can’t replace good health habits, people with inflammatory conditions or other chronic diseases may be able to benefit from them. Anthocyanins are a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound found in berries.

What can a Chiropractor do for Plantar Fasciitis relief?

Plantar Fasciitis can be treated. Your Chiropractor, Dr. Vicki Ferreira, can help you with this condition. Plantar Fasciitis can be treated with chiropractic care.

Reduce stress in the ligament – Plantar fasciitis results from the strain placed on the ligament, causing tiny tears. You will experience inflammation and pain if you don’t take action to reduce the stress. A chiropractor can relieve some stress on the ligament and allow it to heal by making adjustments.

Reduce secondary injuries – This is an important step to take to minimize the possibility of suffering from pain. You can reduce the effects of a misaligned gait by using chiropractic care as part of your treatment plan. These misalignments can lead to problems in other areas of your body such as your lower back, ankles, knees, and hips.

It can be used in conjunction with other treatments. Because chiropractic is an effective, non-invasive treatment that is natural and non-invasive, it is often combined with physical therapy or massage.

Centurion Chiropractor, Pretoria’s Dr. Vicki Ferreira can help you with this condition. Call today to book an appointment.

6 exercises for plantar fasciitis

Tennis Ball Roll

As you sit down, take a tennis ball or rolling pin, a frozen water bottle, or any other cylindrical object that is round and place it under your feet. Gently roll the object under your arch. This exercise can be done for between three and five minutes. Repeat the exercise two times daily.

Towel Stretch

Place a towel around your foot. As you sit, extend your leg out in front of yourself. While extending your leg straight ahead, gently pull the towel towards you. Your calf muscles should be stretching. For approximately 45 seconds, hold this position. Take a break and then repeat the process two more times. This exercise can be repeated four to six times per day.

Toe Stretch

Sitting down, extend your leg so that your heel touches the ground. Reach down and grab your big toe, then bend it backwards. Do this while you flex your ankle so it is pulled away from the ground. For about 30 seconds, hold this position. Take a break and then repeat the exercise two to four times more. This exercise can be repeated multiple times per day.

Toe Curls

Place a towel under your foot while you are seated. You will need to use your toes to raise the towel. To straighten the towel, curl your toes in the opposite direction. Repeat this 10 times. Repeat this exercise up to twice daily.

Calf Stretch

One foot should be in front of the wall. The back foot should be the one that has plantar fasciitis. Keep your back straight and lean forward. Bend into the front knee. Stretch your calf muscles by making sure your back heel is on the ground. For approximately 45 seconds, hold this position. Take a break and then repeat the process two to three times more. This exercise can be repeated four to six times per day.

Picking Up Marbles

You can also place marbles on top of a coffee mug to make it more difficult. Grab the marbles with your only toes and lift them from the ground. Then, place them in the cup. Continue this process until you have collected all of the marbles. This exercise can be repeated up to twice daily.

With the start of lockdown level 5 in March 2020, our lives have changed drastically. Working from home, ordering groceries online, wearing a mask and limiting social gatherings have become our new normal.

Chiropractors are treating more and more computer-related injuries from working longer hours, taking fewer breaks during the day, sitting incorrectly while working and also moving less during the day. Other pains such as eyestrain and wrist pain are also reported.

Initially this was not a problem as we all thought the COVID-19 pandemic will pass quickly, but now as more time passes by everyone is experiencing some form of discomfort. For that reason, I thought it to be a good idea to give you some top tips for perfect posture and great ergonomics.

As it pertains to posture of the head, for every 2.54cm the head moves forward from the central line, the loading on the spine is increased to 4.5kg. What this means is that if the average person leans forward to look at their laptop, the load on the neck changes from 5kg (in an upright and correct posture position) to 19kg (in a bent forward position). Just imagine the stress on the lower back caused by slouching and sitting incorrectly when we take into account the weight of the whole upper body moving forward of the midline.

Read Our Latest Blog: Can a Chiropractor Help With Sciatica Pain?

So how do we fix this?

I am going to give you a few pointers to help with your work setup to try and avoid these problems

Chair

Your chair should allow you to sit upright, with your arms relaxed at your side and your hands/wrists at a 90-110 angle to your desktop. Make sure your armrests are not too high for you as this can cause shoulder shrugging and result in muscle spasms.

Your legs must be able to go under the table. The height of your chair should have your thighs horizontal to the floor, with your feet resting flat. If your feet don’t touch the floor, use a footrest.

Ensure that your chair has a good back support so that you can sit upright. Talk to us if you want to know more about lumbar support cushions.

Monitor and Work Station

Your workstation should be positioned to avoid glare from the windows and overhead lighting.

Ensure that your computer screen is about an arm length (40 to 75cm) away from your eyes and that the top of your screen is at eyebrow level.

Adjust the monitor angle and height so that you are looking straight forward with the neck and shoulders relaxed.

Adjust the brightness of your screen according to your comfort level on a regular basis.

Keyboard and Mouse

Shoulders should be in a relaxed position, arms horizontally in front of you, and the mouse within easy reach.

Keep the mouse as close to your keyboard as possible.

Keep your wrists straight and flat, NOT bent up or down.

Your keyboard should be fairly flat or on a negative slant.

Gadgets

If documents are being typed up, place them on a clipboard or recipe stand just behind the keyboard so that you don’t have to turn your neck while typing.

Any gadgets that you use on a regular basis (e.g. phone, calculator, stapler) should be about 25cm away from you.

Don’t cradle your phone on your shoulder while using the computer; when multi-tasking, hold the phone in one hand and the phone in the other, use a headset or speaker phone.

I hope these tips can help you remain pain-free during this pandemic. Should you experience any aches and pains, please feel free to chat to us and get the healing process started.

Costochondritis causes inflammation and as a result leads to pain and discomfort within the chest area closer to the breastbone. It is a common occurrence caused by various possible factors mentioned in this post. There are treatment options to help manage the situation. You can visit a chiropractor for this treatment.

What causes costochondritis?

Its the name of the condition by which inflammation occurs in the chest. It happens within the region of ribs that connects to the sternum (breastbone).

Symptoms experienced by patients:

Pain in the front of the chest in the region where the ribs meet

Pain during breathing or coughing

The rib joints are sensitive to the touch

Sometimes patients feel pain behind one side of their scapula (shoulder blade). This can effect either side of the back

A sharp or shooting pain in the back

Take immediate action and consult your GP if you or someone you know experiences:

A fever

Nausea

Difficulty breathing

Dizziness

Unusual sweating

Swelling or redness in the chest area (possible infection)

There are many possible factors that cause this. Oftentimes it is as a result of a fungal infection. Sometimes when a patient overexerts themselves this can also add strain to the chest in the front-ribs region. This is the common case with over working during exercise. Repeated trauma to the chest wall (through high-impact sports, broken ribs or fractures) can also lead to the condition.

There are also cases where a patient may develop the condition because of frequent sneezing, coughing, severe weather such as high winds or dampness. Lastly, pregnancy is another cause for costochondritis.

Diagnosis for costochondritis

Because the symptoms include chest pain, making a proper diagnosis means to eliminate any other possible health conditions. These are done with a series of tests including an ECG (electrocardiogram), x-rays, and lab work. Costochondritis often causes pain that “mimics” similar characteristics of a heart-attack, especially that it occurs on the left side. Sometimes the symptoms can also seem similar to a pulmonary embolism (blood clot inside the lung). This is even more reason, why patients who are experiencing this type of pain MUST have it checked by a doctor ASAP!

Chiropractic treatment for costochondritis

Visiting a chiropractor for this condition is a natural and non-invasive solution to managing the condition. This is important for pregnant mothers to be, who cannot risk using medications during their pregnancy. Once your doctor confirms this diagnosis, you can start treatment. Chiropractors focus on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems and because this relates to the ribs, there is definitely a solution.

Breathing causes the ribs to expand and contract and results in chest pain because of the inflammation. If your chiropractor finds that the ribs are taking strain due to being a bit out of position, then it can be gently adjusted using specialised tools to very gently, glide or tap it into place.
This should already start alleviating some of the pain caused by the pressure of the ribs contracting and expanding. Adjustments take place in the front and the back of the chest because the ribs are all connected.

Chiropractors treating costochondritis will also use heat or ice treatment depending on the patient’s body’s needs. This will help to reduce the swelling.

When it comes to alternative medicine, you’ll find a variety of options and each having specialised techniques for treatment. The same applies to chiropractors and osteopaths. While they do share some similarities, this article will help you understand the differences and the treatment types.

Osteopaths and chiropractors look after the health of your back (spine)

We are all accustomed to certain lifestyles, and some of these include habits that create bad posture. A good example of this is looking at a mobile phone, or sitting at a desk. Taking care of your posture is very important to prevent future back issues, as well as joint and muscle pain.

Sometimes when our spine is misaligned, it could lead to “miscommunications” between the nervous system and the rest of our organs. The nervous system starts from the brain and moves down the spine, sending signals throughout the body. That said, taking care of your spinal health will help to improve overall wellness. This principal is true for both chiropractors and osteopaths.

Chiropractors

Chiropractitioners focus on the musculoskeletal system and the neurological system. These work in sync with each other and as mentioned earlier, helps with communications in the body (chemical/hormonal balances).

Technique
Chiropractors use spinal adjustment techniques to align the spine. This technique releases pressure from the spinal nerves. Sometimes when pressure is exerted onto the nerves due to an injury or strain, it could result in pinched nerve or “nerve compression.” The machinery used in chiropractic includes x-rays and MRI scans to help determine the root of the condition.

Training for chiropractors
Chiropractic is huge and steadily growing in South Africa as a means to get effective treatment for joint pain, back pain, and spinal conditions. Chiropractors can get their degree abroad, or study at the Durban University of Technology or the University of Johannesburg.

After qualifying, they will then be registered with the Chiropractic Association of South Africa (CASA) and the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa. Chiropractors focus on helping their patients get pain relief in a more natural way. They help the body to tap into its inherent healing capabilities.

What do chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors treat many things related to neurological and musculoskeletal systems including:

Tension headaches the (World Health Organisation) says headaches affects almost half of the world’s adults at least once in their lives.

Joint pain (arthritis and non-arthritic pain)

Back pain (cervical spine, thoracic, and lumbar)

Scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine)

Sciatica (pain radiating through hip and back or the leg due to a compressed nerve)

Whiplash (neck pain due to forceful back and forth movement)

Sports injuries (various)

Sprains (various)

Tendinitis (tendon inflammation or swelling)

Cholic (could be as a result of muscle contractions, causes continuous crying)

Osteopaths

One of the key focuses in osteopath practice is that of the musculoskeletal system and also the body as a whole.

Training for osteopaths
Osteopaths in South Africa are registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) and have received training in either the UK or elsewhere in Europe. At the Osteopathic Association of South Africa (OASA), you’ll find more details, but South Africa doesn’t have training in the country for this profession.

What do osteopaths treat?

Just like chiropractors, osteopaths also treat musculoskeletal problems but also help to treat the whole body as a result.

Technique

Unlike chiropractors, osteopaths don’t adjust and manipulate the spine. Instead they focus more on soft tissue massage and muscle manipulation.

Joint pain

Sports injury pain

Improved blood circulation

Improved mobility in joints

But apart from musculoskeletal problems, osteopaths also treat the whole person. Using this non-invasive technique, they can also prescribe medication where it is needed.

Conclusion
Both professionals are excellent choices if you want an alternative means for healing and wellness. Many people base their decision on personal preference. Either way, you’ll enjoy the benefits of a more natural and non-invasive alternative medicinal solution.
Spinal decompression therapy is often the course of action when a patient is experiencing chronic back pain. There is more than one way to achieve pain relief for constant and even chronic pain. Many times severe pain can be debilitating which leads to everything else being harder to focus on. Getting treatment sooner than later will make sure that you get on to leading a more productive life. Driving Directions to Dr Vicki Ferreira Chiropractor in Centurion

What is spinal decompression or neurological spinal decompression?

The treatment process “spinal decompression” helps to change the position of the spine as well as create stretch and flex motion. This alleviates some of the pressure exerted onto the gel cushioning sections between the vertebrae of the spine.

When “negative pressure” is exerted onto these cushions of the spine acting in the opposite manner to its current state, it can relief pain. For example, the chiropractor gently guides the spinal stretches for the spine to change the position and force.

This treatment can improve the water, oxygen and nutrition flow and intake which leads to healing.

Why opt for non-surgical spinal decompression?

It is less invasive

More affordable than surgery

It is effective and can treat mild to moderate neck pain, chronic back pain, and sciatica

The treatment may help improve and manage diseased spinal nerve roots

What is the process of non-surgical spinal decompression?

There are various electronic tools used during the spinal decompression session. This includes an electronically operated table on which the patient will lie on. They are also strapped in with a harness which will help with positioning during the treatment session. Sessions last about 30 to 45 minutes depending on the severity of the case.

Electrical stimulation is also used to contract and relax certain muscles of the affected area. Ultrasound treatment helps to generate heat and encourage healing. Hence chiropractors may use heat or cold therapy where needed. Again, each patient is different and their treatments are customised to their needs.

Not everyone may qualify for non-surgical treatment these include the following patients:

Fractures

Tumours

Abdominal aortic aneurisms

Metallic spinal implants

Pregnant women

If you are not sure that you qualify, your doctor will do an assessment and will recommend the best options for you in terms of tailor-made treatment. Surgery options for spinal conditions include:

Laminectomy
In this process the surgeon will remove part or the entire bone forming the spinal disk

Disektomy
Only a small portion is removed from the spinal disk to take the pressure off the nerves

Foramitonomy (also referred to as Foraminectomy)
During this procedure, the surgeon will remove bone and tissue in order to create more space for the nerve roots. This will also relieve any pressure previously exerted on the nerve roots.
Surgeries always pose risks and even though it may have success rates, some of the risks are high. Risks include excessive bleeding, infections post surgery, blood clots, nerve and tissue damage as well as allergic reactions to the anaesthesia.

What to do?
Speak to your chiropractor about non-invasive, non-surgical spinal decompression treatment to help you manage pain.

FAQ – Spinal Decompression Therapy

What is the success rate of spinal decompression?
Eighty six – ninety two percent success rate

How long does spinal decompression last?
35min – 45min depending on patient

Can Spinal Decompression hurt you?
Its very rare a patient will feel any pain however you will feel a stretch in the spine

Myofacsial pain is common in chiropractic patients. This is one of the reasons chiropractic therapy is often the choice when dealing with these types of pain. Typical examples of myofascial pain locations include the back, neck and other muscular parts of the body.

Because the myofascial tissue covers large areas including connective tissue and muscle, pain can usually trace its roots to these tissues in the body.

How does myofascial release therapy work?

Myofascial therapy uses a massage technique that requires the physician to apply pressure to the trigger areas. Sometimes, chiropractors will use the anchor-and-stretch technique of massage which allows for long hand strokes starting at one point and extending down the length of the problematic area.

The chiropractor or physiotherapistl therapist massages the area until the tension and tightness are released.

This treatment is effective for myofascial pain because it targets the trigger points. These areas are the ones affected most by the pain it is sometimes considered the original source of the pain.

How long does treatment last?

Myofascial therapy treatment is long-lasting and the patient may require several sessions over 3 and even 4 months before they feel better. The alternative approach is never an overnight solution, but it is better for the long-term. With this therapy you can enjoy:

Better flexibility in the muscle’s as the tension is slowly worked out

Experience better range as the muscles becomes more mobile

Therapy helps to reduce the inflammation in the area affected

You could leave the OTC medications once the pain has subsided

Who is at risk of experiencing myofascial pain?

Sometimes pain occurs when stress is applied to certain muscles and when this is the case on a continuous level, it could lead to chronic pain. Lifestyle choices and work conditions could also be a leading factor as to why people suffer from tension in their fascia.

Middle-aged people

Patients who had suffered an injury

Trauma

Emotional stress results in tension

What are the advantageous of myofascial release therapy?

Excellent for treating headaches and neck pain
People can benefit from this if they experience frequent headaches. Sometimes the neck muscles are tense and that tension spans all the way up to the head causing tension headaches. Loosening these knots helps to reduce this problem.

Helps to improve posture and reduce recurring injuries or pain
Myofascial release is also beneficial for better posture. Your practitioner may teach you some techniques to help improve your posture. This will lower the risks of reoccurring injuries and pain.

Good for blood circulation
The treatment encourages blood circulation which is essential for the well-being of tissue, muscles and organs.

Myofascial Frequently Asked Questions

What is myofascial tissue?
Myofascial tissue is found throughout the body. It’s robust, yet fibrous in composition. The function is to provide support as a connective tissue as well as protection for the bones and muscles in the body.

What is myofascial release technique?
Myofascial release technique is a special form of massage focused on the myofascial tissues of the body. Its massage process targets the pain related to these fibrous tissues.

What is the best treatment for myofascial pain?
One of the most effective treatments is also a natural alternative to pain medication and that is physio therapy. Some physio therapy treatments for myofascial pain include:

Assisted, gentle stretches to help alleviate pain in the affected muscle area

Heat therapy for help to improve blood circulation and reduce inflammation

Massage may include applying pressure to the tensed muscles

Posture training can help to ease future muscle injuries

Ultrasound methods help in increase in blood circulation and heat within the affected muscle

All the above physiotherapy helps to promote healing naturally.

What causes myofascial pain syndrome?
There are many reasons why people could experience myofascial pain syndrome. Some include muscle injury, tightness in the muscles and prolonged muscle strain that could affect the trigger points resulting in myofascial pain.

Does myofascial pain ever go away?
It’s harder to “get rid” of myofascial pain when it becomes a chronic condition. Practitioners refer to it as “trigger points”. These are the areas that become more inflamed and painful.
Chronic pain is longer lasting and may not simply go away after one treatment session and or using pain medication. Sometimes doctors prescribe anti-inflammatory medication for this, but frequent myofascial treatment can help manage the pain.

Joint restrictions often occur with age but sometimes, poor posture and lifestyle influences cause it to develop even at a younger age.
The misalignment of the spine can lead to joint and other muscular injuries. A professional chiropractor will examine the patient and customize a treatment program.

Your trusted chiropractor Pretoria will speak to you about joint restrictions

Joint restrictions make doing daily tasks painful and strenuous.

Factors that contribute to joint restrictions include the following:

Joint dislocations such as inside the top of the arm

Fracture (old and new) can result in limited range as the body is growing older

Osteoarthritis

Swollen joints

Rotator cuff injuries

Tennis elbow

Muscular dystrophy

Natural wearing of the muscles and joints as the body ages

This is just some of the influences that can increase the risk of developing joint restrictions. Taking care of your spine sooner than later will ensure healthier muscles and joints. A recommended chiro Pretoria would advise that it’s better to treat injuries from the source as is seen in chiropractic rather than temporarily “blocking” the symptoms. The core of chiropractic is to help the patient towards healing in the most natural way.

To prevent misaligned spine

When the spine becomes misaligned, it can result in tension build-up, stiff muscles and inflammation resulting in pain. Having a healthy diet and being persistent in improving your lifestyle will go a long way to better mobility and posture.

Tips on preventing joint restrictions

Do regular exercise as well as stretching (don’t overexert yourself)

Get sufficient rest

Eat a healthy, balanced diet

Learn to cope better with stress so that it doesn’t have a negative effect on your body

Practice better posture when standing, sitting down, and walking

When the body is healthy, it causes less chance of pain and inflammation. Chiropractic treatment can help you to release tension build-up (which if not treated results in spasms and stiff muscles).
Joint restrictions can cause difficulty when dealing with daily tasks and limits mobility as a whole. The sooner you treat it, the sooner you can get back to enjoying life without aches and pains.
