    What is a Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a broad term used to describe the practice or service provided by a chiropractor, a health care professional that specialises in the treatment of back or spine related dysfunctions. They are also frequently known as ‘back doctors’. Chiropractic care involves dealing with patients that suffer from any spine related conditions – back pain, neck pain or headaches, or anything related to the joints and muscles. Their foundation for treatment is that spinal conditions and pain in the back or neck influence the rest of the body. By correcting the musculoskeletal system, other dysfunctions in the body can be healed, restoring normal function and movement.

To do this, chiropractic care begins with a comprehensive assessment of the patient. A detailed history, with information on all previous injuries and conditions is recorded. The chiropractor then does a full assessment, starting with posture, movements, joint functions, palpitation for tenderness and pain, and assessing all ligaments and tendons. After all this information is gathered, the chiropractor can look at the situation and decide on the correct course of action for the patient. The one security that the patient has is that treatment is non-invasive – there are no surgical procedures required. The only thing they have to be prepared for dedication and perseverance with treatment as it may need to be administered over a period of a few weeks.

Chiropractic treatment can include several different techniques and methods that are often used in combination with each other and very seldom used in isolation. These treatment techniques and methods include manual therapy, spinal manipulation, as well manipulation of other joints and soft tissues, acupuncture, heat and ice therapy, exercise, diet, nutritional supplements and massage. Not all chiropractors will use the same techniques, some are more traditional than others; however, chiropractic treatment has been regarded as safe and effective in treating musculoskeletal disorders without any adverse affects.

Chiropractic care and treatment is a conservative way of treating conditions instead of jumping straight to the option of surgery, and often surgery is eliminated as a result. Always try the conservative way before making any harsh medical decisions.
