Many people are familiar with a doctor’s practice, or a physiotherapy practice, a chiro practice is a less familiar health care service, or a less utilised health care service, specialising in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors have been a controversial profession for many years, however that view is changing and they are becoming a frequently sought-after professional in the medical field. The basis of a chiro practice is based upon the fact that they use non-invasive methods, where no surgery is required unless it is a chronic condition that cannot be treated and patients will then be referred to medical practitioners should medication or surgery be required.
Chiro practice primarily treats back pain, neck pain and headaches, as chiropractors are known as “back doctors”, and these conditions are very common amongst the population and can be very debilitating. The practice revolves around treating the spinal column and the effects on the nervous system, but investigating a person’s movement, spine structure and function and biomechanics. There are some practices that are very traditional in their methods; and others incorporate lifestyle factors in their treatment, such as diet, exercise and bigger lifestyle changes, like the quitting of smoking. It is important that they also work closely with other healthcare professional so that the patient is receiving the best all round care for their condition so that there is the optimum outcome.
Chiro practice uses several techniques when providing treatment which includes manual therapy, spinal manipulation, as well manipulation of other joints and soft tissues. In the past, their treatment methods have not always been accepted, but there has been no proof that their methods are ineffective or unsafe, and no adverse affects have been found. X-rays, MRIs and ultrasound science is used in chiro practice to aid in the diagnosis of conditions so that the best possible treatment is provided for the client.
Each chiro practice will differ slightly and there will be variations in their methods and treatment, but ultimately the goal of treatment is the same; they want the patient to have the best possible outcome.
