    The stress we experience in our modern lives can literally make us sick. Any GP or chiropractor will tell you that that is a fact. We race against time all day long as we get up in the morning, feed the family, and try to get everyone to their places of work and school on time. When we get back after a day of solving problems, we attend to the needs of the family before falling in to bed, exhausted.

    There are known and simple ways in which you can reduce your stress levels. Exercise is the most important factor and fitness experts emphasise one should walk for 30 minutes every day or at least for most days of the week.

    Another way to deal with stress is to talk about it to a close friend. Keeping a problem bottled up, allows it to fester and it will only get worse. Psychologists recommend that you keep a diary and write everything down that worries you. It helps you to regain perspective.

    Distraction also works well. Do something different such as going to a show or the movies. This allows the mind to focus on something else. A game of chess or going down the Orange River in a canoe will definitely keep your mind on the challenge at hand.

    Laughter has become a great stress reliever. Watch a comedy on DVD or in the movies or read book full of jokes. People have managed to heal serious illnesses with laughter therapy. Join a laughter group in your area if there is one.

    Change what you can and accept that which you cannot change. If you cannot change you circumstances, the best advice is to deal with it. Easier said than done, but experts are at hand to assist you in the process if necessary.

    There must be something positive in everything. If you can find it, you will be able to overcome it. Be thankful for what you have. Keep a gratitude diary and by doing this you will quickly come to realise how much you have to be thankful for.
